From the influential Schauspielhaus to the historic Theater am Neumarkt, Zurich features some of Europe’s leading performing arts venues. The Comfort Hotel Central Zurich is a flawless choice to experience Zurich’s arts and culture scene, whether you are enjoying a night of opera or an avant-garde theatre performance.

The ornate Zurich Opera House (Opernhaus) is one of Europe’s top opera houses. First opening its doors in 1834, the venue’s stage saw many of Richard Wagner’s works during its early years. The current neo-classical building was completed in 1890. If you look closely at the theatre’s stunning portico you will see busts of famous European writers, including Wagner, Weber, Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller and Mozart. Inside, the auditorium features an elegant rococo style.

The Schauspielhaus Zurich is one of the city’s most important theatre venues and one of the German-speaking world’s most important performing arts centre. Works by Max Frisch, Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Maan, Botho Strauss, Friedirch Dürrenmatt and Elfriede Jelinek have all seen premieres at the celebrated Schauspielhaus. In addition to the main 750-seat Pfauenbünhe, the theatre also operates three stages in the Schiffbau west of the city centre.

Also in the city is the Theater am Neumarkt, one of Zurich’s oldest theatres. Located in a former baroque palace, some of Europe’s most avant-garde pieces are performed on the theatre’s two stages. Zurich is also home to the annual Zürcher Theater Spektakel, an international performing arts festival that brings together artists and theatregoers from around the world.
